There are several things you can do to choose a good consultant.
1. Identify your needs. Write down all of the quesitons you need answered. This will help you understand what you need while identifing if that need can be met with internal staff versus external.
2. Interview a few consultants to get an idea of how they have solved a request or met the needs of other clients. A consultant should be able to answer basic questions about their approach. Compare a few consultants and use a check sheet to identify each strentgth and weaknesses. Be open to considering small consulting shops, like Michigan Healthcare Improvement, that have experience and low overhead.
3. Ask for a proprosal. Be sure to include start date, progress timelines and includes specific deliverables that must be achieved.
4. If you are leaning toward one consultant, but not totally convinced, you can try them out with a small project or a short term engagement.
